H.L. Hunley
U.S.S. Housatonic
Under the cover of night on February 17, 1864, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley made military and scientific history. With the use of her 16 foot spar torpedo, she sank the U.S.S. Housatonic in an attempt to breach the Union blockade of Charleston, SC harbor. This marked the first successful use of a fully submersible ship in battle.

August 8, 2000, just after dawn, the Hunley and her secrets were revealed. Through the efforts of Friends of the Hunley, she has been brought up from her 140 year resting place.

Instrumental in her recovery is a two-part polyurethane foam product called FROTH-PAK® used to protect the hull at the lifting straps. The foam was provided by a local company, NCS Supply, Inc. of Philadelphia and Frazer, PA, and the manufacturer is Flexible Products a division of Dow Chemical. Whether it is being used for insulation, air abatement, art and scenery, or for raising a 250 year old submarine, FROTH-PAK® and NCS Supply can help solve your construction supply needs.
